Rotate Video

Turn a video a quarter, half or three quarter turn, losslessly.

Last updated

How do I rotate a video without losing quality?

Drop the video onto filetity's rotate tool, pick a quarter, half or three quarter turn, and the rotation is written into the file as a display matrix rather than by re-drawing every frame. That is the same mechanism a phone uses when you film sideways, so it is widely supported, the video data is copied across untouched, and the whole thing finishes in seconds whatever the length of the clip. Nothing is uploaded. Turns add up rather than replacing each other, so a file already marked as 270 degrees turned by 90 here comes out at zero with no rotation note at all, which often fixes the stubborn player that caused the problem. Only quarter turns are offered, because any other angle would mean inventing pixels in the corners.

When you would use this

Situations, not settings.

A clip filmed sideways on a phone
The turn is written as metadata the way a phone writes it, so the file is copied rather than re-drawn and there is no quality loss and no long wait.
A video one player shows upright and another shows on its side
Turns add up, so a file already marked 270 rotated by 90 comes out at zero with no rotation note at all, which is usually what fixes the stubborn player.
Footage from a camera mounted upside down
A half turn takes seconds on an hour of recording, because no frame is decoded.

How it works / no cloud

A conversion engine, not an upload form.

The rotation is written into the file as a display matrix, the same thing a phone writes when you film sideways, rather than by re-drawing every frame. So the video data is copied across untouched, the operation takes seconds whatever the length, and nothing is lost.

Straight answers

No accordion. Nothing hidden.

Is it free?
Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
Does it need an account?
No. There is no account system.
Is my file processed on my device?
Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
What formats are supported?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV in, the same container out, with the rotation recorded in it.
What are the limits?
Quarter turns only. Arbitrary angles would mean re-drawing every frame and inventing pixels in the corners, which is a different tool.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded. The tool keeps working with no network connection.
Why is my video sideways in the first place?
Because a phone records the sensor's own orientation and writes a note saying which way up it was. Players that read the note show it correctly and players that ignore it show it sideways, which is why the same file looks right in one app and wrong in another.
Does rotating re-encode the video?
No. The turn is stored as a display matrix in the container and every frame is copied across untouched, so there is no quality loss and no long wait. This is the same mechanism your phone already uses, so it is well supported.
Will every player respect it?
Almost all of them will, since they have to already: phone footage relies on the same note. A very old or very simple player that ignores the metadata will show the original orientation, which is the same class of player that showed your phone video sideways to begin with.
What happens if the video is already rotated?
The turns add up rather than replacing each other, exactly as you would expect. A file already marked as 270 degrees, turned by 90 here, comes out at zero and carries no rotation note at all, which often fixes the player that caused the problem.
Can I rotate by 45 degrees or straighten a tilted shot?
Not here. Anything other than a quarter turn means re-drawing every frame and filling the corners with something that was never filmed, so it cannot be a metadata change and it cannot be lossless. This tool does the case that can be done perfectly.
