How do I remove the sound from a video?
Drop the video onto filetity's tool and it writes a new file with the audio track left out and the picture copied across untouched. Nothing is decoded or re-encoded, so the output holds exactly the same picture data as the input, which makes this the one genuinely lossless video operation here and also the fastest: it runs at disk speed rather than encoder speed, so a large file finishes in seconds. Expect the size to fall by only a few per cent, because audio is a small fraction of a video file; this silences a clip rather than shrinking one. It works on MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV and returns the same container it was given, and a video that already has no audio track is refused rather than pointlessly rewritten.

- Why is it so much faster than compressing?

- How much smaller does the file get?
- Usually a few per cent, and sometimes barely anything. Audio is a small fraction of a video file, so this is a tool for silencing a clip rather than for shrinking one. Use the video compressor if size is what you are after.
- Can I lower the volume instead of removing it?
- Not here. This drops the track entirely, which is what people usually want when there is background noise, a conversation, or music they cannot use. Changing the level means decoding and re-encoding the audio, which is a different job with a different cost.
- Will the silent video still play everywhere?
- Yes. A video with no audio track is completely normal and every player handles it. Some social platforms show a muted icon, which is accurate. The container stays the one you gave it, so an MP4 stays an MP4.
