How do I make an audio file smaller?
Open filetity's audio compressor, drop the file in, and pick a quality: voice for speech, balanced for music on earbuds, or the highest setting when the material justifies it. The estimated size appears before you start and the real one after. Audio size is bitrate multiplied by length, so bitrate is the only meaningful lever, and this picks a target as the lower of what your chosen quality needs and what the source already spends. That second bound is why it cannot return a file bigger than the one you gave it, which is what happens with a compressor that reads only its own preset. Everything runs in the browser tab, so a recording of a meeting, a lecture or an interview is never uploaded.

When you would use this
Situations, not settings.
- An email attachment limit
- Most mail systems stop at 20 or 25 MB. An hour of speech at the voice setting is comfortably under that, where the original recording often is not.
- A podcast episode before uploading
- Hosts charge by storage and listeners pay in data. The voice setting is usually indistinguishable on speech and cuts the file several times over.
- Filling a phone with recordings
- Lecture and meeting recordings pile up at the bitrate the recorder chose, not the one you need. The estimate is shown before you commit to the wait.

Audio size is bitrate times length, so the only real lever is the bitrate, and filetity picks a target as the lower of what the chosen quality needs and what the source already spends. That second bound is why this cannot hand back a bigger file than it was given, which is the standard failure of a compressor that only looks at its preset.

- Does it work on mobile?

- How much smaller can it get?
- It depends entirely on what you start with. A WAV drops by around ten times because it was never compressed. A 320 kbps MP3 at the voice setting drops by about eight times. A file that is already 64 kbps has almost nothing left to give, and the page tells you that instead of pretending.
- Which quality should I pick for speech?
- The smallest one. Speech carries far less information than music, and the voice setting is usually indistinguishable on a podcast, a lecture or a voice note while producing a file a fraction of the size. Save the higher settings for music, where the difference is audible.
- Can compressing make the file larger?
- Not here. The target is capped by what the source actually spends, so asking for high quality on a low bitrate recording gives you the low bitrate rather than an inflated file with no extra detail in it. That inflation is exactly what a compressor that only reads its own preset does.
- Is the loss permanent?
- Yes. Every lossy compression throws information away for good, and compressing an already compressed file does it a second time. Keep the original if it is the only copy, and treat the compressed one as the version you send rather than the version you archive.
- Should I change the format as well as the size?
- Only if the destination requires it. M4A and OGG are more efficient than MP3 and sound better at the same size, so if whatever you are sending to accepts them, they are the better choice. If it has to play anywhere at all, MP3 remains the safe answer.
