When you would use this
Situations, not settings.
- A CV or cover letter going to a stranger
- The Author field usually holds the account name of whoever made it, and the Title is often a previous version's filename.
- A document leaving a company
- Creator and Producer name your software and version, which is more than most organisations mean to publish.
- Anything where the dates matter
- Creation and modification times say when a document was really written, which can contradict what the covering email says.
How it works / no cloud
A conversion engine, not an upload form.
A PDF carries a document information dictionary: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer and two dates, listed in table 317 of the PDF specification. filetity reads those eight, shows you what yours holds, and writes them all empty. The pages are never re-rendered, so the text stays selectable and the file does not grow, which is the difference between this and flattening. The dates are set to the epoch rather than to now, because the moment you cleaned a file is itself a fact about you. The result is read back out of the finished file before it is offered to you, so the empty table you see is the file rather than an intention.

Straight answers
No accordion. Nothing hidden.
- Is it free?
- Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Does it need an account?
- No. There is no account system.
- Is my file processed on my device?
- Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- What formats are supported?
- PDF in, PDF out, with the pages and their text untouched.
- What are the limits?
- This clears the eight document information fields. It does not remove text that is written into the page itself: a name in a letterhead is part of the document, and /redact-pdf is the tool for that. It also does not strip an embedded XMP packet or per-object metadata, which some design software writes alongside the standard fields. A password protected PDF is refused rather than mangled.
- Does it work on mobile?
- Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Does it work offline?
- Yes. Nothing is downloaded to make this work, so it keeps working with no network connection once the page has loaded.
- What is actually in there?
- Usually more than people expect. The Author on a PDF exported from Word is the account name of whoever made it. The Title is often the filename of a different document it was saved from. The Creator and Producer name the software and version, and the two dates say when it was written and last changed. None of that appears on the page, and all of it shows in the properties panel of any reader.
- Does this change how the document looks?
- No. The pages are not re-rendered, so the text stays selectable, the fonts stay embedded and the file does not grow. That is the difference between clearing metadata and flattening: flattening turns pages into pictures, which is the right answer for a different problem.
- How do I know the fields are really gone?
- Because the table you see afterwards is read back out of the finished file, not assumed from having written it. You are looking at what the file says, and you can check it yourself: open the saved PDF in any reader and look at its properties.
- Does it remove a name printed inside the document?
- No, and it is worth being clear about the difference. Metadata is what the file says ABOUT itself. A name in a letterhead, a signature or an address is part of the page, and removing it means covering it and destroying the text underneath, which is what /redact-pdf does.
