When you would use this
Situations, not settings.
- An icon going into a document or a slide
- Office software takes a JPG without comment and is odd about an ICO, which it treats as a system file rather than a picture.
- A logo that now only exists as a favicon
- Sometimes the site icon is the last surviving copy. This gets the biggest version out of it as an ordinary image.
- A form that lists JPG and nothing else
- Some upload fields accept one format even for a small square image, and an icon file is not it.

- Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- What formats are supported?
- ICO in. JPG out, one file per image, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- What are the limits?
- No image count limit. An ICO usually holds several sizes and only the largest comes out; the smaller copies are dropped. Transparent areas become white, so an icon drawn to sit on any colour gains a visible square.
- Does it work on mobile?
- Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Does it work offline?
- Yes, once the page has loaded. The tool keeps working with no network connection.
- Which size do I get out of a multi size icon?
- The largest one in the file. Measured in Chrome on 2026-09-06 against an ICO holding 16, 32, 48 and 256 pixel copies: the browser returns the 256 pixel one, and it does so whatever order the file lists them in. An ICO holding only a 32 pixel copy gives you 32 pixels, and nothing enlarges it.
- Why does my icon have a white box around it now?
- Because JPG has no transparency channel. Icons are almost always drawn with a clear background so they can sit on any colour, and JPG cannot store that, so white goes behind it. Convert to PNG or WebP to keep the icon clear.
- Can I get the 16 pixel version instead?
- Not from here. The browser only hands over the largest copy, so the smaller ones inside the file are out of reach. Convert the largest and resize it down if you need a particular size.
- Should an icon be a JPG at all?
- Usually not. Icons are flat colour with hard edges, which is the worst case for JPG: it puts faint halos around every line. PNG is the right target for an icon unless something downstream insists on JPG.
