## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. Chrome's built-in translator runs on this device and the page makes no request of its own. The one download is Chrome fetching its language pack from Google, once per language, and your text is not part of it.
- Formats: Typed or pasted text, or a .txt, .md, .srt, .vtt or .csv file in. The same format out, with the translation in place of the original text.
- Limits: Chrome 138 or newer only; Firefox and Safari have no on-device translator and are refused with a message. Quality is good enough to understand a document and not to publish one unchecked: 16 of 20 test sentences were clean, 2 changed meaning. Plain text is translated a paragraph at a time, so a hard wrapped paragraph comes back as one line rather than in its original wrap.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, once Chrome has the language pack. The first use of a pair downloads it; after that the page translates with no network connection.

## Questions

### Which languages can it translate between?

English to and from Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Telugu, Kannada and Bengali, which are the pairs Chrome reported it could download a pack for when this was measured on 16 September 2026. Gujarati and Malayalam were reported unavailable and are not offered. Any other combination of those seven is tried when you press Translate, and refused with a plain message if Chrome has no pack for it.

### Does it need Chrome?

Yes. The translation is done by the translator built into Chrome 138 and newer, on your device. Firefox and Safari do not have one, and older Chrome does not either, so on those browsers this page says so instead of quietly sending your text to a server, which is the thing it exists not to do.

### What happens to the timestamps in a subtitle file?

They are never sent to the translator. Only the lines of spoken text in an .srt or .vtt file are translated; the cue numbers, the timing lines, the WEBVTT header and any NOTE or STYLE block are copied through untouched, so the file plays in the same player with the same timing.

### Can I trust the translation enough to publish it?

Not without a reader of the target language checking it. In a 20 sentence English to Hindi test, 16 were clean, 2 changed the meaning, 1 was ambiguous and 1 had a grammar slip. That is good enough to understand what a document says and not good enough to put your name on. The other pairs have not been checked sentence by sentence.

### Where is the language detected, and can I skip it?

On this device, by Chrome's own language detector, once you have typed about twenty characters. Pick the language from the list to skip it. If the detector needs its own one-time download, a button appears for that, separate from Translate.
