# Rotate Image

Rotate an image a quarter turn at a time to get it the right way up, and mirror it if you need to. A PNG stays a PNG, and nothing is ever uploaded.

## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: JPG, PNG and WebP in. The result comes back in the format it went in as: a JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG, a WebP stays a WebP. One file out, or a ZIP for several.
- Limits: Turns are in quarters: 90, 180 and 270 degrees. There is no free-angle rotation, because straightening by a few degrees means either cropping the corners or padding them, and this tool does neither.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after you have used it once. Your browser keeps what the tool needs, so it then works with no network connection.

## Questions

### Why is my photo sideways in the first place?

Phones usually store the photo the way the sensor read it and add a flag saying which way up it should be. Software that reads the flag shows it correctly, and software that ignores it shows it sideways. Saving it here writes the pixels the right way round, so it looks correct everywhere.

### Can I rotate by a few degrees to straighten a horizon?

No. Quarter turns only. Rotating by a small angle leaves triangular gaps at the corners, which every tool solves by either cropping in or filling with invented pixels. Both change your photo more than you asked, so this tool does not offer it.

### Does rotating lose quality?

Not the rotation itself: a quarter turn just moves pixels. Saving a JPG re-encodes it, which costs a little. Rotate a PNG and nothing is lost at all.

### Why does my photo already look upright here when it shows sideways elsewhere?

Because this page reads the orientation flag your phone wrote and shows the photo the way it was meant. Software that ignores the flag shows the raw pixels. This tool will not save an image you have not turned, so to fix that case without rotating, re-save it through the JPEG to JPG tool, which writes the pixels upright and drops the flag.

### Can I rotate a batch?

Yes, all by the same amount. Drop them together, choose the turn, and they come back in a ZIP, each named with -rotated.
