## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: PNG in. ICO out, one file holding 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel versions, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: Sizes larger than your image are left out rather than scaled up, because enlarging adds blur and bytes and no detail. A 64 pixel PNG therefore yields four sizes, not six. Icons are square, so a wider image is centred on transparency rather than cropped.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after you have used it once. Your browser keeps what the tool needs, so it then works with no network connection.

## Questions

### Why not just rename my PNG to favicon.ico?

Browsers will often display it, because they read the file rather than the name. Windows will not, and neither will some older readers, because the file is not an icon at all. This writes a real ICO.

### Which sizes go in the file?

16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, minus any that are larger than your image. The page lists them before you convert. 16 and 32 are what a tab and a bookmark bar draw; the larger ones are for Windows shortcuts.

### Does it keep transparency?

Yes. Each size inside the file is stored as a PNG, so the alpha channel survives. A logo on a clear background stays clear rather than gaining a white square.

### What should I name the file?

favicon.ico, at the root of your site, if you want browsers to find it without any HTML. The download uses your original file name, so rename it after saving.

### What happens if the PNG is not square?

It is fitted inside the square, centred, with the spare space left transparent rather than cropped. Losing the edge of a logo is worse than a little clear space beside it. Crop it square first if you want the icon filled edge to edge. A photo's orientation flag is applied before it is drawn.
