## Questions

### Where do OGG files come from?

Mostly chat apps and games. WhatsApp and Telegram voice notes are Opus in an OGG container, and a great many games ship their audio as Vorbis. Both are excellent formats that a surprising amount of consumer software still refuses to open, which is the only reason to convert.

### Is Opus the same thing as Vorbis?

No, though both usually live in an OGG file. Vorbis is the older one and Opus replaced it, being better at low bitrates and much better for speech, which is why voice notes use it. This page takes either, because the container does not tell you which is inside until you read it.

### Will the MP3 be bigger than the OGG?

Usually, yes. Opus is markedly more efficient than MP3, especially for speech at low bitrates, so the same recording needs more bits as MP3. The conversion never asks for more than the source spends, which limits the growth, but the trade you are making is size for compatibility.

### Can I keep it as OGG and just make it smaller?

Yes, and that is usually the better answer if the destination accepts OGG. The audio compressor takes an OGG in and writes an OGG out at a lower bitrate, which will beat any MP3 of the same size. Convert to MP3 only when something will not play the original.

### Does a voice note keep its length exactly?

The audio is preserved exactly in length. What does not survive is anything the chat app stored around it, such as the waveform preview or the timestamp, because those live in the app rather than in the file, and an MP3 has nowhere to keep them.
