# ICO to PNG

Convert an ICO icon to PNG with the clear background intact. You get the largest size stored in the file, free, and nothing is uploaded.

## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: ICO in. PNG out, one file per image, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: No image count limit. An ICO usually holds several sizes and only the largest comes out; the smaller copies are dropped. Nothing else about the picture changes, so there is no quality setting.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after you have used it once. Your browser keeps what the tool needs, so it then works with no network connection.

## Questions

### Which of the sizes inside the icon do I get?

The largest. An ICO is a container: one file holding the same picture at 16, 32, 48 and often 256 pixels. Measured in Chrome on 2026-09-06, the browser returns the largest copy regardless of the order they are stored in, and this page converts that one.

### Is the clear background kept?

Yes. Both formats have a real alpha channel, so the transparent area around the icon stays transparent and no white square appears behind it. That is the reason to pick PNG over JPG here.

### Can I pull out all the sizes separately?

No. The browser hands over one image per file and it is always the largest, so the smaller copies cannot be reached from this page. If you need a particular size, convert and then resize.

### Does this work the other way, PNG back to ICO?

Not on this site. Writing an ICO needs an encoder your browser does not have, and asking a canvas for one silently returns a PNG with the wrong extension on it. Rather than ship that, the conversion is not offered.

### What if my icon holds only one size?

You get that size. The largest-of-several rule only matters when there are several; a favicon holding a single 32 pixel image comes out as a 32 pixel PNG. Nothing here enlarges it, and the Image Resizer takes it smaller if you need that.
