# HEIC to WebP

Convert HEIC to WebP so iPhone photos open anywhere and stay small. HEIF too. A second lossy pass, so keep the original. Nothing is uploaded.

## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: HEIC and HEIF in. WebP out, or JPG and PNG if you switch. One file per photo, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: One photo per file. A HEIC can hold several images, such as a burst or a Live Photo still with its extras, and only the main photo is converted. WebP is lossy, so this is a second pass over a photo the iPhone already compressed.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after the first conversion. The 350 KB decoder downloads once and your browser keeps it, so later visits need no network at all.

## Questions

### Why WebP rather than JPG for an iPhone photo?

Because WebP makes a smaller file at a matching quality, and every browser has read it since 2020. JPG is still the safer choice if the photo is going to a print counter, an older program, or someone you cannot ask first. WebP is the better one if it is going on a web page.

### Does this lose quality?

Yes, twice over. HEIC is already lossy, so the photo lost detail when your phone saved it, and WebP is lossy as well, so this puts a second pass on top of the first. Nothing recovers what the first one took. Switch to PNG on this page if you want the decoded pixels stored exactly.

### What happens to Live Photos and depth data?

Only the main photo comes across. A HEIC can carry a burst, the short video behind a Live Photo and the depth map Portrait mode uses, and none of that fits inside a WebP. The original is the only place those survive, so keep it.

### Is any part of my photo transparent?

No. A phone camera writes a fully opaque picture, so the alpha channel WebP offers sits empty. File size is what you gain here.

### Does Safari need the decoder too?

Yes. Safari can show a HEIC on its own, but this page uses the same libheif decoder in every browser so the pixels it writes are the same everywhere. The download is about 347 KB and happens once.
