## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: HEIC and HEIF in. PNG out, or JPG if you switch. One file per photo, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: One photo per file. A HEIC can hold several images, such as a burst or a Live Photo still with its extras, and only the main photo is converted. No limit on how many files you convert.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after the first conversion. The decoder is about 350 KB and downloads once, then your browser keeps it, so later visits work with no network connection.

## Questions

### Why convert HEIC to PNG rather than JPG?

Because PNG does not compress the picture again. HEIC is already lossy, and sending it through JPG runs it through a second lossy pass on top of the first, which is where edge artefacts and blotchy skies come from. PNG stores the decoded pixels exactly as libheif produced them. If you are going to edit, crop, retouch or archive the photo, that matters. If you are going to email it or put it on a website, it does not, and JPG is the better choice.

### How much bigger will the PNG be?

About fifteen times bigger for a phone photo. A 3080 by 2052 iPhone HEIC of 636 KB came out as an 8.8 MB PNG, measured in Chrome on 2026-08-26. PNG never discards detail and a photograph has detail in every pixel, so no setting here will make it smaller. If the size is the problem, use HEIC to JPG instead.

### Does PNG transparency help here?

No. A photo from a phone camera is fully opaque, so the alpha channel PNG adds sits empty. Pick PNG here for the missing second compression pass, which is the part that changes the picture.

### What happens to Live Photos and depth data?

Only the main photo is converted. The short video attached to a Live Photo, the depth map used for Portrait mode and anything else stored alongside the picture are not carried into a PNG, because PNG has nowhere to put them. Keep the original if you need those.

### What if it says the file could not be read as HEIC?

The file is not a HEIC, whatever its name says. A JPG renamed to .heic, or a partly downloaded photo, is the usual cause. If the message says the decoder could not be downloaded instead, the fault is the connection; reload and try again.
