# GIF to PNG

Convert a GIF to PNG and keep its clear background. The first frame becomes a still image, every pixel is kept exactly, and nothing is uploaded.

## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: GIF in. PNG out, one file per image, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: No image count limit. An animated GIF gives you its first frame only. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, so the PNG carries the same 256 and is not more colourful for being a PNG.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after you have used it once. Your browser keeps what the tool needs, so it then works with no network connection.

## Questions

### Does the animation survive?

No. PNG holds one image, so you get frame one as a still and the rest is dropped. APNG, the animated cousin of PNG, is not something a browser canvas can write, so this page does not pretend to offer it.

### Is the transparency kept?

Yes. A GIF marks one palette colour as fully clear, and PNG has a real alpha channel, so those areas come across still clear. PNG can also hold partial transparency, which a GIF cannot, so nothing is given up in the move.

### Will the PNG be bigger or smaller?

Usually close to the same. Both formats compress without changing a pixel, and a 256 colour picture is exactly what PNG is good at. A long animation becomes one frame, so that file gets much smaller.

### Why would I want a PNG rather than the GIF?

Because most software treats a GIF as an animation and a PNG as a picture. A PNG drops into a document, a slide or an editor without anything trying to play it, and it can hold the soft edges a GIF had to make jagged.

### Why does it say a file could not be read?

The GIF is damaged or is not a GIF, whatever its extension says. A partly downloaded file is the common case. Save it again from the source and retry. When several were dropped, one bad file stops the whole batch before anything is written.
