## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. Chrome's built-in translator runs on this device and the page makes no request of its own. The one download is Chrome fetching its language pack from Google, once per language, and your text is not part of it.
- Formats: English text, typed or pasted, or a .txt, .md, .srt, .vtt or .csv file in. Hindi out, in Devanagari, in the same format.
- Limits: Chrome 138 or newer only; Firefox and Safari have no on-device translator and are refused with a message. Quality is good enough to understand a document and not to publish one unchecked: 16 of 20 test sentences were clean, 2 changed meaning. Plain text is translated a paragraph at a time, so a hard wrapped paragraph comes back as one line rather than in its original wrap.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, once Chrome has the language pack. The first use of a pair downloads it; after that the page translates with no network connection.

## Questions

### How accurate is the English to Hindi translation?

Measured on 20 English sentences read by a Hindi speaker: 16 came back clean, 2 changed the meaning, 1 was ambiguous and 1 had a grammar slip. The two that changed meaning are worth knowing: "with the wifi off" lost the "off", and "out of milk" was translated as milk that had run out of something. Read the output before you rely on it.

### Why did a word come back with two possible meanings?

Hindi has words that cover two English ones. In the test, "पता" came back where the English said "know", and पता is also "address". The translator picks one reading per sentence with no way to ask you which, so a sentence that reads oddly is usually one of these rather than a typo.

### Does it type in Devanagari?

The output is Hindi in Devanagari script, as text you can copy, paste and save. It is not transliteration: an English word is translated, not respelled in Hindi letters, so a name or a brand in the English usually comes out as a Hindi word for it rather than the name itself. Check names in the result.

### Is English to Hindi the only direction?

This page is English into Hindi only, because its URL says so and asking again would be asking a question you already answered. Hindi into English has its own page, and /translate lets you pick any pair Chrome has a pack for.
