# BMP to JPG

Convert BMP to JPG and lose most of the file size, because a BMP is not compressed at all. Free, choose the quality, and nothing is uploaded.

## Capabilities

- Free: Yes, with no watermark and no page limit.
- Account required: No. There is no account system.
- Processed on device: Yes. The file is read by your browser and never uploaded. There is no server to send it to.
- Formats: BMP in. JPG out, one file per image, or a ZIP when you convert several.
- Limits: No image count limit. Very large bitmaps are bounded by the memory your browser will give a canvas, and a BMP is large by definition: 4000 by 3000 pixels is about 48MB at 32 bits per pixel.
- Mobile: Yes, on any modern mobile browser. Large files are limited by the memory the phone gives the browser.
- Offline: Yes, after you have used it once. Your browser keeps what the tool needs, so it then works with no network connection.

## Questions

### Why is my BMP so big?

Because it is not compressed. A BMP writes out every pixel one after another, so the size is width times height times the bytes per pixel, whatever the picture happens to be. That simplicity is also why screen capture tools and older Windows software still default to it.

### How much smaller will the JPG be?

A great deal. Against an uncompressed source, even a high quality JPG usually lands at a small fraction of the original, because it is competing with no compression at all rather than with good compression. The measured figure is shown before you download.

### Does the conversion lose anything?

Yes. JPG is lossy, and this is the first lossy pass the picture has taken. For a photograph that is invisible at a sensible setting. For a screenshot with text in it the halos around the letters show, and PNG is the better target.

### Does a BMP have transparency to lose?

Almost never. The BMP files people actually have are opaque, written by screen capture, scanners and older Windows programs. If yours is one of the rare 32 bit files with an alpha channel, convert to PNG instead and keep it.

### Can I resize it in the same pass?

Yes. A longest edge of 2048, 1600, 1024 or 640 pixels can be chosen and the bitmap is scaled down to fit before it is encoded. A 48 MB scan rarely needs every pixel, and fewer pixels is the biggest saving of all.
